Description

Counselors can encounter clients involved in the family court system through various roles. Whether counseling children, conducting evaluations, or providing co-parenting counseling, counselors need to understand the intricacies of family law and court proceedings. As clients entangled in the family court system can present with a range of challenges, counselors must learn to clearly define their roles, communicate with attorneys, navigate no-contact orders, understand parenting plans, and establish firm boundaries with all parties. This presentation will detail the ways that counselors can encounter clients involved in the family court system, and outline best practices for working with these clients.

Learning Objectives

1. Participants will be able to identify and describe the numerous roles counselors can play in family court cases.

2. Participants will be able to define roles, boundaries, and rules when working with family court cases.

3. Participants will be able to explain the legal and ethical limitations associated with parenting plans, no-contact orders, and marital settlement agreements.

Cost

  • $15 for NBFE members (i.e., CFMHEs and CFMHE applicants/candidates) and, for members of  our partnering organizations (see Professional Partners for current listing)
