    Description

    In recent years, the use of ketamine, kava, and kratom has surged, driven by their reported benefits and growing popularity in various communities. This four-hour presentation aims to equip healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of these substances, focusing on new trends, pharmacological effects, reported benefits, and potential negative consequences. The session will begin by exploring the rise of ketamine, kava, and kratom, highlighting their increasing prevalence in both clinical settings and recreational use. Participants will delve into the unique properties of each substance, gaining insights into their mechanisms of action and reported therapeutic benefits. Attention will then shift to the adverse effects and risks associated with these substances, providing a balanced view of their impact on physical and mental health. Participants will learn about the legal and professional implications of ketamine, kava, and kratom use, ensuring they are well-informed about the potential challenges in their practice. Finally, the presentation will cover intervention and treatment strategies for individuals using these substances. Practical approaches to screening, assessing, and managing use will be discussed, empowering professionals to provide effective support and guidance to their paitents. By the end of this session, participants will be well-equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to address the complexities of ketamine, kava, and kratom use in their professional practice.

    Learning Objectives 


    Objective 1: Identify and describe the new trends and rise in the use of ketamine, kava, and kratom.

    Objective 2: Understand the pharmacological effects, reported benefits, and negative side effects of ketamine, kava, and kratom.

    Objective 3: Recognize the implications of these substances for healthcare professionals, including potential risks and legal considerations.

    Presenter

    John Puls, LCSW, MCAP

    John has been dedicated to making a meaningful impact in mental health and substance use disorder since 2013, starting as support staff. To expand his knowledge and skills, he joined the advanced standing master’s in social work (MSW) program at Florida Atlantic University, completing his degree in May 2017. John is now a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and a master’s certified addiction professional (MCAP). John also shares his expertise with the next generation of social workers as an adjunct professor at Florida Atlantic University’s School of Social Work. Additionally, he serves as a qualified expert witness, conducting forensic reviews for cases involving substance use disorder and mental health.

    Description

    The presentation will define forensic mental health evaluation in the context of immigration cases, describe the types of cases and list legal requirements for each. Unique issues for expert witnesses in immigration court will be addressed.

    Learning Objectives 


    Objective 1: Define elements of a forensic mental health evaluation.

    Objective 2: Describe 3 principles of a forensic mental health evaluation process.

    Objective 3: List and explain three types of immigration cases requiring evaluations.


    Objective 4: Describe 2 challenges when testifying in immigration court.

    Presenter

    Dr. Kathy Lanthorn Cardenas, CFMHE, EdD, LMHC

    Dr. Lanthorn Cardenas earned her CFMHE in 2008 and has since provided more than 1300 forensic mental health evaluations. Many forensic evaluations were provided in Spanish. A large number of evaluations were for immigration cases, as well as criminal cases, civil litigation cases and family court cases. She has provided expert witness testimony more than 140 times. Dr. Lanthorn Cardenas conducts evaluations in jails and in the Tacoma, WA immigration detention center. She continues to provide counseling on a very part-time basis.

    Description

    Many mental health professionals lack training on factitious disorder imposed on another (FDIA), also known as "Munchausen by Proxy" or "medical child abuse." Evaluating for FDIA can be complicated, so so we're offering an introductory webinar consisting of an overview of DSM-5-TR criteria for FDIA and current research on FDIA.

    Learning Objectives 


    Objective 1: Identify the DSM-5-TR criteria of FDIA.


    Objective 2: Describe similarities between FDIA and medical child abuse.


    Objective 3: Summarize the most recent research on FDIA.

    Objective 4: Differentiate between Malingering and FDIA.

    Presenter

    Dr. Ari Gartin, Ph.D., LMHC

    Dr. Ari Gartin, Ph.D., LMHC is a clinical and forensic psychology consultant and the founder of Ariga Psychological Services, LLC. She specializes in complex evaluations and forensic consultation in cases involving Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another (FDIA), also known as Munchausen by Proxy. Her doctoral dissertation was mentored by Dr. Marc D. Feldman, M.D., Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and one of the world’s foremost experts on factitious disorders and medical child abuse. She worked with Detective Mike Weber, M.A., a nationally recognized law enforcement expert in FDIA investigations who has led and consulted on dozens of high-profile cases, during her doctoral training, and she is currently consulting with Professor Beatrice (Bea) Yorker, J.D., R.N., M.S., F.A.A.N., a nationally recognized authority on Munchausen by Proxy and medical child abuse who has served as an expert witness in civil and criminal cases across the country, on active FDIA cases. 

    At this time, Dr. Gartin has three cases pending evaluation on the topic, including a class action lawsuit against a hospital accused of misdiagnosis. She is an active member of APSAC and writes widely on FDIA, caregiver pathology, and the intersection of psychology and the law.
